This guy was wandering around town most of the day today until they made him sleepy and hauled him back to the woods. First moose I have ever seen outside of the zoo.
Lucky nobody was hurt. Getting towards the time of year when they become mean spirited during the fall rut. My family had a camp in Maine and I used to fish the lake in my canoe. Some of the best smallmouth bass came out of the mouth of the river that fed the lake. I paddled up into the river one fall day only to come face to face with a big bull moose like that one pictured. He was feeding on the blueberries growing at the waters edge. I back paddled a fast as I could when he started snorting at me. Chased me right out into the lake swimming after me. Scared the bejeezus out of me. I think I was only 12-13 yrs old at the time.
He think he looks impressive standing there, you should be in the Maine woods hunting grouse, beautiful setting poplars ferns golden and blaze orange and red leaves, smoking your pipe holding a beautiful Browning shotgun and feeling like you have found the place where you would want to have your ashes strewn someday.
Then you hear a rukus like God heard your thoughts and is going to bury here on the spot, sapling trees out in front of you as thick as your wrist thirty feet in the air are falling, rather crashing down in front of what sounds like a run away train left the track, you bring your shotgun (loaded with #7 shot! ) up and get behind the biggest tree near you and you watch as one of them big mamajamas comes running ten feet away from you.
You know how you walk thru thick woods picking your way thru and going around things, THEY DON'T and if a Springer Spaniel working his pattern out in front of you spooks one, get the H@ll out of dodge brother
I was in Montana a few years back snowmobiling. I was rippin up and down this forest service road (no traffic at all, just me), the snow banks on each side were about 4 ft. high so it was like a bobsled run, such a blast! I come around a bend probably doing 50-60mph and there's a cow (moose) that just crossed the road and her calf still on the otherside. I lock up the brakes fishtailin' and come to a stop maybe 75' from them, no room to turn around, after a few seconds I just decide to fly past her, no other choice really, never looked back. A cow moose will F you up when she's got a calf with her. Beautiful animals.
Bad news; The State DEC tranquilized the moose and loaded it into a trailer. They waited until it came to and transported it to the Adirondacks. The following they discovered it had died overnight. They surmise the trauma from the capture & transport was more than it could bear (no pun). It was estimated the bull was about 16 months old.
