Forecast called for a decent weather window so after careful consideration, made the call to head out for some bottom fishing Sunday 5/4. Two buddy's headed down Friday and I loaded the boat and headed down Saturday afternoon. Hit the sack around 10:30ish and up around 4:15 am and had to make one stop for ice. Made our way out the inlet using the spotlight for finding the markers and ran out at 27mph. Watched the sun come over the horizon at the 20 mile mark half way to the spot. Fished in 90' to 110' and caught quality BSB one after the other with most keepers between 16" - 20". Hooked into a few AJ's on butterfly jigs but they all came unbuttoned. One surprise came when I hooked a small king near the bottom on a jig. Got one red porgy and a jolthead porgy. Called it around 1:30 or so and it was a little choppy the first 5 or so miles making 20mph. Gradually got better and did the last 20 or so miles at 30mph to 30 plus. Hit the carwash, loaded a few things in the truck and made it back home by 9:00 pm. Cleaned fish Monday evening. I grilled the king Tuesday evening. It was really good. This evening I may take the leftovers, flake it and make some fish cakes. I've never tried it but now seems like the time. The BSB went in the freezer.....perhaps a Mother's Day or Mother's Day Eve fish fry?!?
