LED Lighting

We have been fishing nightime for stripers out at Block Island lately. We always seem to have the problem where someone forgets the flashlights and lantern. So I recently added some LED lighting which turned out awesome! I installed 3 different types of lighting for the different phases of use on the boat. I mounted LED strip lights under the gunwales which light up the entire deck.

Then I added rope lighting to use as running lights when underway at night. Also added 1 watt lights across the stern.

Finally I added some LED lights to the stern and the side of the gunwales to use as low lighting for striper fishing. I run these all night long and they hardly use any power whatsoever.

I love it!
Now you got to show us how you mounted the rope lights and also which lights you used throughout.

Thanks tsubaki and Hedge. I will attach links to bottom of post.

Ok, the rope lights were bought from Overton's. I purchased three lengths, one for each side and one for the cuddy. I also attached a 6 gang fuse block to the bulkhead inside the cuddy on the port side. My power source is a deep cycle trolling motor battery I had laying around which I mounted to the floor with a strap inside the cuddy, port side close to the fuse block. The switches are all simple toggle switches that I mounted to a 6"x4"x2" plastic project box bought at Radio Shack. I mounted the box to the port side on the fiberglass (as you look at it sitting in the passenger seat) and drilled a 1/2" hole thru the center of the box into/thru the bulkhead for running my wires into the fuse block. Now I had my perfect mounting place for all my different toggles nice and neat(I will take pictures of the box and post soon).

The rope lights come with a flat mounting flange that run the length of the rope light. The instructions state you can either staple them to whatever you want, or use screws to attach. I slightly unscrewed the screws that hold the teakwood molding against the side of the fibrerglass gunwale. Then seperated it with a flat blade screwdriver which caused a space. I then slid the flange into the space between the teak & fiberglass and tightend the screws back down firmly which worked great. For the both ends of the rope lights, I used a simple 1/2" plastic cable clamp with the screw hole in it. I screwed the clamp with a stainless screw into the teakwood which holds the ends in nicely from being pulled out accidently. The third rope light was installed inside the cuddy against the overhead support brace which runs port to starboard close to the sliding hatch. Used four of the 1/2" plastic cable clamps and screwed it down with stainless #6 screw 1/2" long. Spliced all three ropes together and ran into a seperate toggle into the box.

I also attached eight small 1 watt utility lights I bought off of ebay on the stern equally spaced. I spliced them into the rope lights all into one switch for my running lights. The plastic cable clamps were bought at my local hardware store.

The LED's were purchased from "Super Bright LED's.com" The LED strip lights I chose came 16 feet long (5 meters) on a roll. I cut in half on their pre-marked cut lines & attached them to two 8 ft. long 3/4"x3/4" 90 degree piece of pine corner moulding I bought at the local lumber yard. The LED strip comes with mounting tape attached so I just peeled off the paper and stuck it to the underside ( L <<<< that inside corner of the corner moulding if you are looking at the end "L" 90* shape. Then I pre-drilled 3 small mounting holes in the side of the wood moulding. Then transfered and pencil marked the wood moulding mounting holes against the side of the teakwood on the sides of the gunwales. I attached the wood corner moulding inside the gunwale and underneath out of sight using 3 stainless steel 8-32 X 1" lg screws with washers and nuts. The strip lights are pointing downward when mounted with the wood corner moulding which is scewed to the inside of the teakwood. The strip lights are used only for lighting the deck when a fish is on board, and we also use them when we board in the dark. They are super bright as the picture shows and they give off such an ambient bright light it's unreal, sort of like walking in a well it up kitchen.

The LED fishing lights are actually LED Deck & Step Lights which are totally waterproof as all the rest of the lights are. I put four of them equally spaced mounted just above the 1 watt untility lights on the stern. The LED's I mounted on the sides are called LED Accent Light Modules. I tied them into the LED' Deck & Step Lights all on a seperate toggle. Beautiful low light, but bright enough to see when fishing and they are just enough light for fishing.

I hope this info helps and any other questions I would be glad to answer if I can. Here are the links:
