Hopefully soon to be new owner

Hello,

So, I've been jones-ing for a boat since moving to Norfolk, VA about 8 years ago. I grew up on the CT River and L.I. Sound boating all my life. None of my co-workers have a boat larger than a kayak or canoe... I'll be taking a ride up to Hampton, VA tonight to checkout a '83 V20 CC with 2000ish Evinrude 115.

FWIW, my brother recently restored a 77 Maycraft CC and put a new Evinrude 90hp on it. He loves it and keeps sending me pictures of himself out in the sound having a great time.

I'll let you all know how it goes!

Thanks,

Is it the one at Salt Ponds Marina? I know there has been one there for sale there for a while. I hope it works out for you. I'm also not too far north of you, about 30 minutes further than DragLink. I lived in Norfolk as well as a child for a little bit as my dad was Navy. Anyways hope the boats a good fit and a good deal for you.

It is indeed the one at Salt Ponds! I did go check it out tonight too. Traffic wasnt bad getting over the HRBT. Wow- that marina is rather sizable. I did find the boat, right where the owner told me it would be.

IMHO... this one is too much of what my wife and I are not looking for. If it was just me... ehhhhh maybe I'd do it.

Now, there is a v21 in Southern NJ that someone posted about in the for sale section looks really clean for $8400. Unfortunately, I don't think the owner believes someone from VA would be interested to drive 5 hrs to see a boat. Yes, strange but true... this is what I was told, and that put me off a bit. I suppose I could persist - maybe I intoned tone into reading the email respose.

Anyway, not to be a PITA on my 2nd post here, but I did have a kinda sucky sunday boat-wise.

There is a v20 IO in Williamsburg/Surry area. It has the 170 inline. I believe thats a chevy 250? On any of these I think I'm going to want a survey.

And thank you to those who have responded! I run the fordsix.com forum and we have an "Introductions" section to welcome new members. I didn't see one here, but this looks like the right place. Thanks for that.

And for the record... last year I bought a 1994 land cruiser FZJ-80 from a great guy in WV. 220K, full lockers, new AC system, we'll maintained. I found it on a forum for land cruisers, so I figured this might be a good place to find a nice v20. Throw me a bone forum gods!! :)

Thanks,

Perry

Welcome to the site. Love the name. (I had a 66 Mustang Fastback 2+2) As to a boat, ...well, it's worth whatever a person is willing to pay for it. But IMHO, unless that boat has a relatively new engine, $8400 is on the high side to pay for a V21.... and this from a guy that paid less than $3000 for his 1996 V21 with a good tandem trailer included. It's the summer, and prices are high because of that, but like I said, to me, that's a lot of money. You can probably do better. Anyways, again, welcome to the site.

I've seen that boat on there as well. I personally do not hate the idea of an IB/OB. That's really what I was looking for but hard to find in the center console. That boat looks like a nice rig and may be worth the trip to at least see it and I believe you could get it for maybe a little under 4K which seems right to me if its as nice as the pics look. As for an $8K V-20, I agree with Destroyer in it would have to be spectacular or repowered with a brand new 4-stroke. But if that's what you're looking to spend, heck I'll rebuild my motor and sell ya one.

As for the guy in Jersey, I'd definitely persue that. 5 hours is nothing for a nice boat. Just ask him when a good time for him would be and that you'll be there. I'm currently looking at a new motor in Jax. Fl. Right now which is an 11 HR drive for me but it's a great deal. Plus I have family local there so I could kill 2 birds with one stone and visit them for a while. Post a link of where you found the boat here also as there are a few Jersey guys active here so maybe one of them have seen the boat. Worth a shot.

Is this the one you inquired about?

If so that would definitely be worth checking out. Only thing that throws me off is if that's a FICHT motor. I know that's right around the time BRP bought out OMC and fixed the FICHT problems but I have heard many bad things about the older ones. I could be wrong, if so I'd certainly try and go see it, especially if he'll work on the price some.

Hunt continues...

Yep. That's one in NJ. I remember the FICHT engines and them being a bit problematic before BRP taking over. Expensive spark plugs that need to be indexed in relation to the injectors too.

There's also one in VA Beach, but I hadn't heard if it's still available.

This IO/OB is still available: http://norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/5682560798.html
I might have to take a ride to go see this one soon.

I'm definitely going to ask for current pictures before :)

The hunt continues... thanks for the good advice!

That one in Va Beach looks incredible but pics are a bit fuzzy so who knows. Also that's an older motor (late 90's early '00's) so I think that price might be a bit high. But when those motors are right they are sweet.

That one in Williamsburg looks like a good deal to me. But only if you don't mind an IB/OB. All personal preference I guess but if it were practical I'd put a 3.0 in my boat in a heartbeat.

Planning on taking a ride to see the I/O one wednesday. The seller says he has been on here a couple of times while working on it. Also says that it looks better now than the pics posted - so that's a plus.

I'm not down on the inline I/O. Although... if an OB craps out you can just kick it off the stern and grab a new one. :) we'll see what this one is and go from there. I'm crossing my fingers. Plus I like inlines... owner says it did a comfortable 35 mph with the old pitted prop. Now it has a new prop. 35-40 should be plenty for me for now.

FWIW, the wife likes that one in NJ more. I think because it looks so clean...

If this one doesn't pan out, I might revisit the NJ one. Haven't heard back from the V21 in VA Beach yet.

Hopefully the hunt will be over Wednesday!!! :)

Ok, so I bought one...

I had delivered the one from Surry, VA delivered on July 22, then was off on vacation for a week. 1986 V20 Cuddy - 170 stern drive. When I got back, I dove in and started cleaning it up. Fired right up, ran fine... Then I noticed some weeping between the riser and manifold and a faint steam coming out the exhaust. The PO had cleaned up the exhaust elbow and replaced the gasket - so, being cautious, I removed the exhaust manifold and elbow. The elbow has a hole where one of the hold down bolts goes through. So, that's getting replaced. The aluminum exhaust manifold is in pretty good shape except for the #4 exhaust port is slightly eroded. I'm replacing that as well...
The 4" heat exchanger looks fine. I'm also replacing all hoses.

As far as the hull - No signs of damage, no bottom paint.
