I have a question about my 1982- V20 cc with a 155 hp Evinrude O/B.  We were anchored in the Delaware bay yesterday with seas 2-3 feet and 15- 20 knot winds with the bow facing the wind.  I had about 75 feet of rode out in 14 feet of water for a smoother ride which didn't help much .  With those conditions I would expect a little water to wash over the 20" transom but I was getting a lot of water which was back washing up on the deck through the deck drains .  I'm worried about transom rot from water getting under the aluminum cap.  I had a full tank of gas (60 gal = 360 lbs) , (2 batteries= 100 lbs) and my fishing buddy and I (400 lbs) on board. About 900 lbs total.  Also noted there was not any water in the bilge so that wasn't a weight factor.  Some of the waves were dunking the engine up to the engine cowling .  Is this normal ? Do I have a weight distribution problem?  Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

UP DATE --  I pulled the cap off the transom and the transom is soaked.  The plywood isn't rotted but is starting to separate.  Any ideas on what I should do?

The good news I'm readin' into this is that yer deck drai/ scupper systems workin' GOOD...w/ no water in bilge and assumin' the floor-deck was clearing in an acceptable amount of time, you sound OK...

...however, several guys here (and I'm workin' on it) have fashioned a splash wall on the forward end of their splashwells to keep that kinda water intrusion outta the boat and confined to the splashwell...can't recall configuration of '82 transom...post up a pic and let's see how difficult it would be ;) ... I'm about to leave til Fri, but lotta these guys can tell ya what needs to be done...

This is why Full Transoms/brackets have caught on so well...and one of my biggest concerns about takin' my 20" tranny out in big water... ::) ...

Low-Cut...good on women's dresses...bad on boat trannies

;D .....

Thanx for the reply Reelapeelin, Ill get a pic on Monday and post it. Right now I have some plastic covering the boat and 2 heavy duty C- camps on the transom ,squeezing the water out of the plywood. I think I'm going to try the git rot unless someone talks me out of it.

add to what reel said, it can be to much weight in the rear, to help some here have moved the batterys to the CC, also get some one way scuppers to stop the water coming in from there.

Transome cap, your going to have to let it dry out some, then I would (you have to remove the motor!) and use glass and resin to seal the transom, Stinky & Skools have both done this, fill with glass sand smmth and paitn to match boat or add Formula 27 to top coat the glass for a hard cover. No longer need the aluminum cap!! Reinstall motor and never worry again!!

2nd chance,
every time i see that the more i think nice work!!!! looks like it came from the factory like that .... now get that new 200 hp etec on there!!!! ;)

Macojoe ,
I purchased the Git rot today and I'll apply it some time this week after the transom dries out. I Also think that's the way to go , glass the top of the transom and forget the metal cap. Moving the batteries forward is a good idea and I have just the right place for them. I have the scupper flaps on the outside of the transom I guess I need to install a pair in the tray for the deck drains.

2ndchance,
Thats a beautiful job but way out of my budget for now. Maybe someday.

MSBHAMMER and Parishht,
I'm from Vineland NJ and I hit the bay just about every week at least once. I launch out of Anchor marina at Matts landing and sometimes Fortescue. Yesterday we were about 1 mile west of bug light and caught 6 stripers on bunker, water was 47 degrees on the out going tide . Five were keepers but lost one keeper and through back one short. I don't have a scale but the sizes were 37, 35, 35, and 30 inchers . I hope to see you guys out there someday.

Hey Menacer, I run out of Bidwell Creek with a 79 V-20. I'm glad to hear the striper action is taking off I hope to maybe give it a try this Friday.

Hey Menacer,Ive used Git Rot, and it saturates the wood fibers good, but had trouble getting the fiberglass resin to stick to it. I used it on an old carolina wooden boat that i have and when i glassed over it and went back to sand it it peeled right off. I went back over the git rot with Marine Tex and it held very good.
