Hate it when that happens

I just lost my PC 2 weeks ago. The CPU cracked from overheating The fan kept running on high, so I opened it up to spray the dust out of it. I guess I didn't let it cool long enough before spraying it out and down she went to never get up again. So I ordered a new laptop from DELL, and the wife decided it was going to be her ANNIBERSARY present and kept it for herself:nut:. So now I'm stuck with her old laptop that's barely clinging to life:cen:.

Ferm... A few things.. First, just spraying the dust off a cpu should not have harmed it. If anything it will make it run cooler/better. I presume that you didn't start your comp again until after you put new thermal paste on the cpu, reattached the cooling fan and made sure it was working? If so then it should have been fine. In all cases what brand CPU are you running and at what speed? I have a ton of older/still good cpu's lying around here. Mostly AMD, but several Intel also. Might be that if it's just the CPU you can get your comp up and running again for just the cost of a postage stamp. :head:

It was a 9 year old COMPAQ that I had revived from the dead SEVERAL times already in the past. What got it was it was still warm when I sprayed teh dust out, and my canister of cleaning air got tilted and some liquid hit the CPU dead on when I sprayed the heat sink and fan outv1. I got it to do one motherboard boot before it completely gave up the ghost on me, but it died completely during a BIOS test. It's done for as I already took the hard drives out of it and unlocked them so I could transfer the data to another PC, and then I erased it so I could use it in an external hard drive enclosure for back-up.

Yep Willy, she pulled MAJOR rank on me here. It always seems to happen that way.

LOL Welcome to married life...

Yea, liquid spray on a hot chip will crack if for sure. Sorry for your misfortune. Well, the offer of the CPU still stands. Even though you pulled the HD you can still rebuild the comp if you want. Not sure it would be worth if since it's 9 yrs old.

BTW, it was nice of you to buy your wife that superfine anniversary present...... :hide:

ANNIBERSARY present. I was a wise man, her birthday is May 27th and our anniversary is May 30th. I got a 2 for 1 deal on that one. As for teh PC, I can't see putting anymore time or money into a 9 year old PC that was a cheapy when it was bought in 02. I'm shocked it lasted this long to be honest. Now I've got her old laptop hooked up to my monitor as the monitor in the laptop is going out:cen:.

Well, it's true that only the very best people are born in May.. (mine's the 11th) So I'd say you did ok on that 2 4 1 deal. I cannot help you with the spending time aspect, but if you decide to change your mind the cpu offer is always available..Like I said, it's yours for the cost of postage if I have one. (Chances are I have one or a better one) Don't forget I had a computer company for several years (The Computer Doctor) so I have a lot of older parts lying around.
