Guale Girl Grouper

Seas weren't all that bad, 2-3' but runnin south of SE was a little snotty so we hit some stuff at G and SFC. Water at G was a beautiful teal-green and 71deg. Bait was pretty easy to come by, nothing on top but stacked thick at 50'. We even had a couple Kings de-bait my sabiki, short fat guys.

The bite was pretty slow but we managed a couple nice Grouper and some really nice BSB with only two break-offs. Not a bad way to bring in the time change but its still my least favorite day of the year......

Great Job!!!

I have only caught a few Grouper, but what a fight!! My biggest was a 34 pound Black, and man I thought I had a whale!!

Thanks MJ, a 34lbs Black is a nice fish.....

We were just talkin last night the difference between a Snapper's thump and run and a Grouper's inhale and dive. Man they are a blast!!! Cant wait to get out again......

Awesome fish! Last time I fished for grouper I ended up using an 80W on a bent butt rod with the drag locked down. We would wait for them to hit and tow them out away from the wreck with the motor. But the biggest I reeled in was hardly twenty pounds. I could not imagine 34. Still had a fit reeling them up even with the reel in low gear. Snapper and grouper have no comparison on how they fight. Good job on the catch!

I know what you mean Jason......I use 150lbs PowerPro:party:

Im part Italian and lets just say that me and break-offs dont get along!!!!!

Lol. My 80W has 200lb Power Pro on it. Thats some tuff stuff to break off! I remember the year before last I ripped a rod holder out of the gunnel trying to tow grouper. I dont know if it snagged or if we had a fish on. I cut the line when I saw the reel about to go over. Safety lines are a neccessity on my boat now. Still its hard to beat that kind of fun! Better than working.

No doubt!!! The only PITA is hang-ups.....I have to tie off to the cleat and put it in gear to get it back!!!!

I am not sure how deep he was?? I was on a 4 day trip on a party boat out of the Key's to the Dry Tortuga's to get him. he was the pool winner and I made $240 on that guy!! Lots and lots of yellow tails down there.

I got a hold of one those blacks in the gulf down in Florida. Here's a picture of a picture of my fish he was about 22 pounds and he about broke the rod off flush with the rod holder!!!! I was grabbing a beer when the fish hit. Very fun to fight.

Nice job! I've never caught a legal grouper H/L, but I have been broken off, so I think I know how they feel on the end of the line, lol.

Nice job SSI, way to set the bar high for the V20 fleet. If I could ever put together a crew with a grouper mindset I'd be out there a lot (during grouper season). Seems all my crew wants to do is fish the jetties or ride around in circles offshore trolling. Mention of anything else gets heavily ridiculed and criticized.

Yea I know what you mean Blue......Those are the guys that havent been pinned to the gunnel after havin the rod damn near ripped from their hands!!!!! I learned that thats all they need to change their minds......just a little hammered down drag that doesnt give an inch!!!!!

I bet that would do it. LOL To make matters worse, a lot of times we are trolling not far from where we could be bottom dropping.......and to make those matters even worse, sometimes the trolling bite is slow or non-existent. Sure would be nice to be able to switch it up.

I agree.....

Blue, next time you hand them a bottom rig and if they give you the "what's that fer?" face, hand them a scrub brush and ask them again which one they want:beer:

I think that may be the reason they don't like bottom fishing - I don't supply the rods. I'm not much of a hand-holder when it comes to taking other adults fishing. We get out there and their snoopy poles with 10 lb mono won't accomodate enough weight to hit the bottom on the drift and hard for them to reel in. AKA they bring a knife to a gun fight. I figured they would learn after the first couple times....but I guess they aren't paying attention. LOL Taking my 15 y.o. nephew and his friends is a different story. They actually pay attention and listen when told to do something.

We need to fish together BR...bottom fishing is my middle name.
