Fluke and Flounder

I'm a fresh water Great Lakes boater, are Fluke and Flounder the same thing. I had dinner tonight at Red Lobster and had stuffed Flounder it was excellent. I like to know the difference. Thanks Bill Mc ;D

fluke and flounder look almost identical, fluke grow significantly larger.A good sized flounder [or flattie] is 3 lbs, don't know what the record is but most fish caught are not much more than 3lbs. There are 4 and 5 pounders, few and far between. Around here, Long Island, New York, flounder season starts mid march but they seem to show up a bit later as the years go by.This passed years flounder season was nothing to brag of. The beautiful white meat is delicious. Fluke show up here late may/ early june. Fluke are predators and have a pretty nasty set of teeth. A good size fluke is on average 5-6 lbs and they can get up towards 13-15 lbs, that's when they are referred to as a "doormat". Fluke meat is white and tender, sorta mild and delicious like flounder. As far as catching them, on the hook they are two different fish,a good size flounder does'nt have much of a fight were as a good size fluke does'nt give it up so easy.My personal best for flounder is close to 3lbs. and fluke, about 6.5 lbs. I ate both of 'em. MJ is the authority on the subject, I think he's caught thousands.

Phestus is right, in addition:

Fluke (aka: summer flounder) is a warmer water fish and what the Southerners refer to as "Flounder".

Flounder (aka: winter flounder) is a colder water fish than fluke and not found in southern waters.

Another difference of the 2 is the direction there heads are facing are opposite.

I love Fluke!! I like everything about them!! Fishing for them the taste of them, Hell I have a stuffed one I sleep with!

All above ir right on!! I personal best is 11 pounds caught with live scup, live lining for Bass. We got a 10 and 11 pounder one right after another that day!

Comercial you can get 200# aday at 14" here in Ma.
Rec. you can get 7 fish at 17"

14" fish here like 2 #, 17" are 3 to 4#

This is why I buy my Commercial Lic every year!! I don't want to spend the cash to run out for 7 fish!!
If I get into the hard I can make anough to pay for the day and have pleanty for the freezer!

Here in Ma. when you give up you comercial lic. you can NEVER get it back!

Leave your sexual preferences out of it and stick to the topic please! :o ;D

People tend to call fluke flounder. Especially down south. I've never ever caught a flounder, but I've also caught a many a fluke, which I subsequently called flounder. It must be a southern thing cause I don't know anybody down here that calls a fluke a fluke.

Down here fluking is something you do to get pregnant!

Flounder fishing is what we do for flukes :)

If it has teeth its a fluke and if it doesn't its prolly a flounder. Also I hear fluke is a left-sided fish (eyes on left) while flounder is right-sided (eyes on right).

I've never needed to tell the difference because there must not be many flounder down this way!

Wow CB, 3 different 73lb stripers? Thats a trip! Only 5lbs off the world record! Wonder if they weighed them right away? I can't believe the world striper record hasn't been broken yet.

Wonder if there's any money in it for the next lucky record breaker? Maybe it will be me ;D

NC record was broken a couple weeks ago. I think it was 61 lbs.

Yeah, that is pretty incredible eh Blue? Mr. Church's 73 lber has been questioned on more than one occasion. Probably because of the date and acurate record keeping more than anything else. I've seen the pictures and it's still a very large fish no doubt. But, that's what is on the records. Tony Stezko's 73lber was caught surfcasting off the beach. Charlie Cinto's bass is a skin mount that is displayed at local fishing shows. ENORMOUS!!! :o He's a funny and interesting guy to talk to in his old age.

Sorry Mac, I highjacked your thread with Striper stuff  ::)
I think this is Cinto's big fish:

He's still built the same way. When you see the skin mount, you get a whole different appreciation of how big that fish really is. :o
