FishBones hits the Bay

God
Had mechanic look at the Evinrude, would not idle below 1200 rpm. He made adjustments but on the hose, he said it may not idle under load and if not I need a carb rebuild. He told me to try and blow it out on the water.
I did as told and took a half bushel of clams with me.

Well the carbs are going to get rebuilt next week, but there were stripers to be had, had non stop action for two hours on the hook near the Coast Guard station. At least 6 just under 28", and two keeps at 32 and 30 inches. Three monster run offs and one good size girl lost right at the boat.
Left my camera home but got this shot just before cleaning time.

Glad Fishbones is finally in the water. Sorry about the carb rebuild, but at least you know what the problem is. Nice looking fish. Were you fishing false hook channel also or just in front of the CG station? I like to troll near the tin can grounds also.

Nice!!!!!

I plan on getting my boat ready this weekend....The stripers are coming!!!

questions:

You caught those with clams?

You clean them fish in the kitchen?

Exactly what I was gonna ask. Gonna be a mess in there that my wife would not be okay with. Nice fish.

Yes, I fished the inside of the bay near the coast guard station, I originally went outside but there were 4 footers rolling under me and no way to anchor up. There is a spot where on the outgoing tide the stripers like to cruise the shore area because fish get pushed up there, theres actually a drainage stream that comes thru some rocks right there.
Yes, I cleaned the fish in my kitchen due to the fact I had no time to clean them at the marina like I normally do, and my wife just gets out of my way.
No, no one gave them to me, as a matter of fact other than a charter boat that was fishing near me no one else had the balls to stay out in the heavy wind against tide I was in.
Yes, some people are so envious as to suggest such a thing.

Oh yea, yes on clams, spring here the clams work best, at least for me. I troll sometimes and have had mixed results, especially from about this time forward in the season when the yellow eyed devils show up. And the reports I got say they are here and at this time mostly outside the Hook, but that changes from day to day.
I take a five gallon pail and usually for a short trip I buy half a bushel of fresh clams, I cut open a dozen or so to use as bait right away, and two to four at a time I smash them pretty good in the pail so meat is hanging out of them, I use my kids old aluminum little league bat that stays on the boat for the sole purpose of smashing them and anything else that needs adjusting.
I put out two lines, one weighted heavier to go right on the bottom, and one lighter so it drifts up off the bottom more with the tide. The lighter one is the one that got hit the most this time.
I usually end up with a good mix of clam juice, bits and pieces in a soup on the bottom after a dozen or so smahes, I squirt in some commercial bunker oil, soem old cat food if I found it cheap at a grocery store, stir it up with the smasher put a little sea water in and dump it right behind my motor.
Every single time I dumped this mix in the water I got a hit within four to five minutes.
Of course I also throw the clams in after smashing them up at sporadic intervals.
I then lite a smoke, pop a beer and think on how clever I am.

Nice fish willy congrats ....get that boat tuned and ready for the Grand Daddy of V20 get togethers...... The Barnegat Bay Raft up Northern Style.

OK even a blind dog can hunt every once in a while. :sun:
I wont bust your chops on foul hooking the fish v1

The good news :news: is you had fresh fish for supper.
Congrats "O Rough Water Skipper"

I don't scale them puppies, I pull the fillets on both sides and toss them in the trash.
I then take those fillets, steam them in the bamboo steamer till they flake.
I then break them all up in little bitty pieces, toss in some spices, panko bread crumbs, some shrimp chopped up and make striper cakes.
A little wasabi or soy on the side, some fresh asparagus or a nice salad and enjoy.

There you yankee boys go again, screwing up a perfectly good fish by doing something so girly as bamboo steaming!!! Nothing takes the place of good ole fried fish bites! um um um.

I've done the fish bites thing, they are good, but us "Yankees" like a little variety in what we eat. Frying is not the answer to every kitchen question.

Fried Fish, Fried Shrimp, Fried potatoes, Fried Pierogies, Fried Zuchini, Fried Sweet Pototoes, Fried broccoli, Fried Mushrooms, Fried Chicken, Chicken fried steak, Fried Clams (with bellies), and Fried Ice Cream.

Friying is the answer....
