first deer of the year on my birthday

So I decided to go sit in a tree stand this evening today is my birthday and I decided it would be a great way to relax by hunting the 120 acres of soy bean in my back yard. The land owner has crop damage permits and I was able to get my name on the muster. These crop permits allow you to harvest deer by any means neccesary so I decide to take my 22-250 ruger m-77 with bull barrel out with me tonight. The Doe came in the field and I ranged her at about 230 yards, she closed about 60 yards over a course of 30 minutes and I ranged her again at +or- 170 yards. So I decided to take a shot right in the dome!!! If any of you know anything about a 22-250 you would know it is one of the most accurate wildcat round ever made. It takes a lot of guess work out of long distance shots. So back to the hunt, I put the scope on 12 power and adjusted my parallax I bought the scope up and put the cross hairs right on the top of her head and pulled the trigger. It was a good end to a great day. The meat is in the fridge. If I was to graphic to some of you I apologize it was a great shot that I wanted to brag about.

That is a headshot kinda caliber isn't it? Of course so is a 22LR. Ballistics are superb, a friend has a A-bolt 22-250 that I have shot but dare I say he has more kills with his 22Semi-auto. If you notched the stock for every kill it would be a slingshot. Good shot BTW and I was almost there with you in the write-up. Because you did it, it ain't bragging it is stricktly reporting the events. Happy birthday, vinison, clean air and a good time.

Happy Birthday Kracker. Awesome shot. I have been getting the itch bad. Did not hunt last year and probably wont this year. Once I finish the V i will be back in the game. Something is quite relaxing about sitting twenty feet up a tree in thirty degree weather. :deer: I have a .243 WSSM A Bolt and that has been a great rifle for long shots!

I have never had a gun that I could garantee I would make that shot so I always aim for the heart/lung shot. How often are you able to shoot at 200 yards to get comfortable with a shot like that?

Congrats also. My venison freezer is getting pretty bare right now and I hope my sons and I are able to stock it again this fall.

I must say, that over all the firearms I've owned and shot, the 22-250 is my absolute favorite. I've been in the military and was a police officer for 7 years, so I've used quite the variety of guns over the years. When I was 17, I owned a Savage 22-250 (Couldn't afford Ruger at the time. That's my favorite firearm, in fact my Shepards name is Ruger). I went groung hog hunting in Western Virginia with my dad. On the last day of the hunt, I recorded what is still my longest shot to date. 525 yards with a ballistic tip boat tail, (can't remember what grain). The ground hog was a little bigger than a soda bottle. I LOVE that round. Unfortunately, Virginia goes by calibre, not grain, so it is illegal to hunt dear with them there.

Happy birthday, I'm glad to see it was a great one and congrats on a great shot and your first deer of the year.

I use my 22-250 for fox and coyote hunting normally and Target shooting. I bought the gun from a seal here at damneck base and he used it to practice short range sniper. I have shot this gun so many times that at known range with a good rest I'm very comfortable shooting this over 200 yards. It's sighted in at 2 inches over at 100 yards so at 170 to 200 she's shooting the mark. I love this gun its a point and shoot type of gun.

Kracker you might wanna rephrase that. :haha: My phone went straight to your post when i clicked the link. Lol

Blue started it!!!! He wanted to see her hole!!!!! Lol!!!! Now that's funny.

Here's your picture blue this is the best I can do. Just put you thumb over the antleers and that's what she looked like.:deer:

Sniper!!! Nice shot and :birthday:. The 22-250 is my fav rifle in the box. We can't hunt with them for big game in Canada someone thinks they are to small. I think they needed a bigger gun to make up for the lack of trigger skills. Check out Barn's XXX for the 22-250 if you reload I shoot wildboars with mine out to 500 yards. My colection also include a 243, 270 and a 300WSM for large bolt actions they all shoot with in 2" of each other at 400 with the loads I roll for them.

The remington express rifle rounds I had laying around are pretty much a Target round, they are what I was shooting lastnight and wouldn't want to take a vital shot with these bullets because they have hardly any expansion rate and would have passed right thru her leading to a lengthly track to find her. I used to shoot the winchester cxp which was a deadly round to the vital against deer with this gun back in the day due to its extreme expasion rate We also cannot hunt general firearms with a 22-250 but can hunt a nuisance permit with them.

What do you think about the killing ability of a 222 within 100 yards? My dad can do the hand loads to get the most out of it. This year will be my son's first year deer hunting in NH and they don't care what you use as long as it is bigger than a 22LR

25-06 is the smallest round for rifle we can use here in Virginia. And our rules state larger than 22lr also. So my 22-250 during general firearms is off limits.

A 243 is THE gun great for recoil sensative pepole. I roll and shoot a 80 grain hornady GMX's out of mine. I killed 3 cow elk last fall one head shot two lung shot's. No recoverd bullets they all went through and through one was over 300 yards. I shot a BIG cow moose in the head and did recover that one it was 79.6 Grains and perfictly mushroomed.

I don't hunt. But I'm glad it was a clean kill. Nothng worse than having an animal suffer. Happy Birthday Kracker. Hope you have tons more!!!:birthday:

(And I still prefer my Marlin .35 Remington lever action with my Leupold scope).

Have you tried a .243 WSSM yet? Tad more kick than a normal .243 but it packs some serious knockdown. I have the A-Bolt varmint stalker with a bull barrel. With a Leupold Vx-L scope I can shoot 600yds easy. Overall its a fun to shoot rifle. Especially when i do not have a sore shoulder after shooting.

I was looking at them last year when I picked up my 243 Winchester featherlite. I have heard the WSSM's burn the barrle's out fast so I steared clear of them. I got all my rifles pretty much sloted for caliber/bullet weight/Distance/Knock down power:sly::deer::sly:
