okay just picked up this 1976 wellcraft this weekend and it has a 1984 evenrude 235 on the back with alot of new parts on it and it runs great. I run it all day sat but here is the problem if you run it 3/4 or better throtal it trip a busser like over heat then you throtal down and it goes off in a a few min i can run it all day at 25mph gps no problem. it has a new water pump in 2004 and thermostat. i ordered a new thermostat though. it is pumpumg water ca use I see a good sream out the pee hole. i did have bad gas in it when he brought it friday and it broke down on us that when i found out he didn't empty the old gas out from sitting for a year. i drained the gas out completely and put high octane in 93 to be exact. i do have the book to refer too as well. I checked compression and they all read about 90 with a cheap guage from harbor frieght. they all read the same though. i can leave my hand on the top of the motor and i don't have to move it from being to hot but the head are hot to the touch. i read somewere it could be a fuel restrictor also triggering the sensor. any help would be great to trouble shoot this thanks. james boyd

Jboyd, welcome to the site.

I don't consider myself an expert at all but I see a few things in your post that stick out to me.

One is I'm pretty sure 93 octane does not do anything to help a 2 stroke outboard engine. Second, you mentioned a new water pump in '04. If it hasn't bee run much since then it might still be ok, but I think the general rule of thumb is changing the impeller every 2 - 3 years to be safe (esp with salt use).

Hold tight....help is coming! Also best of luck on getting that horn to stop sounding.

thank you blue yep i going to order a new pump today was told the same at the marina and the previous owner did run in salt water and he let it sit for at least a year. also looking to find out what to coat the top of the boat were i believe the gelcoat is gone cause fiberglass is making me break out. it don't look bad a little dull but i was wondering about a clear coat or something along that line. i have to get pic up cause the previous owner had a box made that puts the motor 3 ft off the transiom as well the transom was repaired as well but with this stuff you dig the wood out and pour in it seems strong and I read were other people have used it and liked it but i don't know if I would ever go off shore with it like that but it just fine were i'm at here on the red river. plus i plan on taking the 235 off and putting it on my checkmate and putting the 150 sazuki back on the wellcraft:sly:, the checkmate would be more fun with the extra ponies and the welcraft don't need to be that fast to fish. james boyd

Have to checked the timing advance? To much advance will make it run hot at 3/4 to full throttle.

P.S. That motor needs to run mid to high octane all the time and it likes "LOTS" of it.

ran all day sent 50 dollars and had a 1/4 tank left. I was happy with that though I not running off-shore 30-40 miles and back. yes i only put 20 gal in and it holds 40. I did not want to fil it up in case it decided to quit on me and have money going bad in the tank:beer:. how do you check timeing on this by the way. thank you james

Attach standard timing light to #1 cylinder (Highest driver side cylinder) . Have some one else run the boat at full throttle in the water and verify timing advance setting using the marks indicated on the flywheel at the pointer located in the right front of the flywheel. Better done in the evening for better visibility. Believe your motors calls for 26 degrees advance but I run it a 24 to save the old girl. 1984 235 needs to run 89 octane at a minimum and like high test all the more unless you have the low compress head gaskets which is unlikely as they are getting harder to find anymore.

P.S. You can also try just pulling the thermostats out and running it that way to see if they were the problem is as well.

replaced one thermostat today :party:other on the way. so is new water pump so if that don't work i check the timing thanks. it does look like it it had a fuel presure reg but it has been disconected dunno why also think electric choke disconected. i took pics :pic:but have not got them loaded yet and camera is dead so needs charged first. james boyd

I believe if you read the book for you motor it will say run high octane just stay away from the ethenal. look for the stiker on the pump that says might contain 10% ethenal if i does don't put it in. but I might not really matter but why take a chance. changed water pump yesterday redoing wires today they were really bad hope to be back on the water by tomarrow maybe this evening:sun:. james boyd

nothing right today

okay here id the deal tested in driveway today water was coming out around lower unit after I changed water pump. is this bad did I do something wrong this is a 1984 235 evinrude also tryed tilting motor down and it would not checked all wire and batter fine i think put a tester on wires at tilt motor with someone at switch and wires had power. I heard the big fuses humming but no movement up or down. I so agravated hopeing to fix this so I can use it tomarrow last day before I leave town for work. anyone have ideas on this please help. I want to be on the water sooo bad. james boyd

okay figured out wireing last night corosion was the culprit. but desperate for and answer of weither water shouls come out between lower unit and the center case. I hope thats no big deal ready for the water:beer:

Normally no - is it peeing water with good pressure? Are you sure you got the water tube mated to the pump output? if so, you probally messed up the exhaust gasket on the lower unit and its leaking.

If it were me I'd drop the lower unit and verify - better safe than sorry.

went to the marina and he said it is fine it is peeing so water is going though blocks got wireing replaced today bypassed a safty switch by the tilt motor it was the problem needs replaced but all the end of the wires were bad so I replaced them too. how inportant is it to have that safty switch hooked up what does it do?

:sun:still heating up at 30 but figured out the problem. it has a custome build sea drive allum box on the back which is square. well if your going fast say 30 or more since the box was not tapers like the ones you can buy it directs the water away from the motor so it cannot take in much water mostly air. bad news I have to take the motor off and have the box rewelded. good news thats a cheep fix probably 40 to get re welded after I cut it up to add a taperd bottom to it. the good news is my gf loves the old boat as well it is nice to ride in just wish i lived near the ocean to really get some use out of it .
