Durabak over wood

Do you think if I paint a piece of plywood with Durabak on both sides it will be waterproof enough to use over my gas tank on the deck. I'm thinking of replacing my spider cracked fuel tank cover with 3/4 Plywood then painting the entire deck with Durabak.
 
I would not waste all that paint! Thats a lot of cash!

If you wanted you could glass some wood and then just paint the top to match the deck, But heck if you are going to do that you might as well repair the cover you have there, there are a few posts here from people that have done it, its not all that hard!

I don't know Cy:head: I'm still thinking about buying a sheet of 3/4 Seaboard Grip X. The stuff is $337 for a 5x8 sheet. I can use half for the gas tank cover, a piece for the small deck lid in front on the tank and maybe use some for a pulpit and other odds and ends. I'm just not sure that it is structurally strong enough to span the opening without some kind of support.

I would say you could rip some 2" by width of the gas cover pieces of starboard and use them as joists under the cover??? maybe 3 or 4 from front to back??? that would give it less flex i think. you could just attach then right to the bottom of the cover:head:
 
3/4 will handle 3 x 4 Seaboard pretty easy!! If anything put one support across middle but I no think you have to.
My box covers were smaller, lets say 3 x 2?? and you never felt anything move!! and I am 320 pound stomping on them all the time!
 
The cover on my 79 is a whopping 63" x 30" its pretty much the whole middle of the boat. I'm really looking for the easiest fix, I don't want to get involved with fiberglass. I gues I could always find a way to support it if it flexes.
 
awe come on Mulv, I'm Mr. non-skilled at fiberglass but from what I can see this is about the easiest thing to fix that is fiberglass related....and just think - we would all bow to you once you are the fiberglass king

I agree that glassing is the cheapest way and you really can't mess it up!! In my first post I linked him to someones thread showing them doing the glass.

But he was asking about Seaboard so I was telling him that it will work fine.
 
Heres the reasoning for the Seaboard. I currrently have a piece of plywood covering the small hatch in my floor, so I need a better solution there. My current fuel tank cover has a lot of cracks so I really don't want to just recore. And the final reason: I have a 14ft fiberglass skiff that has a 30" square cover over the middle seat. Well I had the cover in the back of my pick up 2 weeks ago and forgot to close the tailgate. Well needless to say it slid out the back of my truck and got rode over about a 1000 times before I realized it had fallen out. Also I figure I'll have about a half of sheet left after I do everything I need to do. I could double it up and use 2 pieces for a pullpit, and I'm sure I can find a use for the rest.

I think I have finally convinced myself, I'm going to order it tomorrow. i just need to decide on a color.
 
5200 doesn't bond well to the starboard, seaboard whateveryoucallit - ask me how I know.

How will you seal around the new fuel cover to keep water out if you go this route?
 
Blue, I was planning on using 3-M 4200. I also heard that Starboard/Seaboard is not easily bonded together with adhesive. i have heard however that 3M 4200 or 5200 will work fine for a seal.
 
If you screw it down real good and tight, I am sure the seal will be fine. You are not trying to bond anything just seal it.
