Cuddy Hatch trouble

The cuddy hatch on my boat has always given me trouble.  The two sections seperate in rough seas (just when you nedd a hatch bouncing back at you!)  It was modified by the previous owner with some screws at the ridge on the front edge of the bottom piece, I was wondering what was there originally?  
There is a good deal of play between the teak on the upper section too.

Any ideas?

Garubba, Where you have the screws there should be a piece half round 1/2" in dia. mounted. This pulles the front (upper) hatch closed. Don,t have a camera maybe somelse can post picture? Crusher
