My boss told me about this today:
From Bogue Inlet Pier (Skools Out's stomping grounds!)
4-22-12 ...... SUNDAY ...... BLACKFIN on the PIER! ......
After 41 years here at the pier, I never thought I would see this! ............. MAURILLO MARQUEZ (Cary, NC) landed a 33"cl -- 21 lb. 12 oz. BLACK FIN TUNA on a PLUG! ........... Maurillo caught it on a Shimano STELLA 5000 with 20 lb. test line and a RED HEAD/WHITE BODY GOTCHA PLUG! ............. It is not unusual to see a BONITA; and ALBACORE are fairly common, but to see a school of BLACKFIN TUNA running along the pier is RARE! ..........
Another account:
“21 lb 12 oz Black Fin Tuna caught on Bogue Inlet Pier today. Big news was the TUNA, no not a fat Albert, no not an Atlantic bonito a citation BLACKFIN tuna landed by Maurillo Marquez of Carey, NC. The fish was hooked on a green head GotCha and weighed in at 21-pounds, 12-ounces. Fish took 1 hr. 15 min. to land and was gaffed by Danny Glover. I have pics to prove it. The happy angler saw the fish swimming by the pier, about 20-feet out and jigged the GotCha in front of it and he so to speak, took the bait. FYI, no you do not need a permit to catch/keep blackfin tuna, false albacore or Atlantic bonito.”
