Bilge pump question

On my '78 Center consol V my bilge pump runs all the way up to above the rub rail where it exits. To me this strains the pump and takes more juice to pump the water. Im thinking about relocating the thru-hull lower.....like 2 0r 3" above the water line like most boats....any thoughts on this?

You can see how high the thru hull is in this pic

One concern would be when having to plow a little in bad seas or even in fairly rough seas the water coming in the thru hull.
If you are dead set on doing it, see if there might be a scupper that might fit over the thru hull. Maybe the ping pong ball type?
Would a bigger pump serve the situation better?

I had thought about that...heck every boat I've ever owned has always had the thru hull low on the water line with no issue. My inboard Mako even had one up front towards the bow.

I think I'm going to put a 2000 in, the 1100 just seems small

I think I've got a Rule 1500 in mine, it responds well and takes up little room.
Also, I ended up changing to a clear, thick plastic water hose instead of the regular bilge hose and put a barb 90 at the pump to shorten the hose length.
I felt the friction of the 90 would be less than the weight of the water in the extra hose length.

I think you are right about the 1500- that would prob be a better fit. I have a lot of slack i the hose. I think I'll upgrade the pump and see it I can shorten the hose here and there and see how it performs...thanks for the info!

Looks kind of strange above the rail. I think the only reason to do that is so you see it easily when its pumping????
Your '78 doesn't have overboard drains Huh?

My '84 has it just below the rub rail and it works fine. I wouldn't want it any closer to the water line than that. You put it 3 inches above waterline, it only works for 3 inches of sinking...You want it at least above the open motorwell height. And moving is not worth the trouble of patching the hole.

Now that I think about it...the last Mako I had(outboard w/bracket) it was just under the rub rail. It was my inboard Mako that had both the front and rear thru hulls just a few inches above the waterline
