90 HP Yamaha - Ethanol Woes

What do I need to do? 4-stroke Late Model

Raycor Filter plus the factory filters were all muddled up. Fuel line is getting soft. My buddy may have put off the replacement of the fuel lines too long. Now it won't turn full RPM and the idle has gone south. If it was a Merc I would be pulling the injectors and sending them off.
What do I need to do first? Besides replacing all the fuel lines and filters?
 
Well, no replies must mean it ain't a common enough issue. Got the manual. Looks like the fuel delivery is similar to the Merc. Vapor cannister, multiple filters. I will dive in today.
 
Update- Confirmation on the bad fuel. Phase seperation. New filters (3) plugs (old plugs looked great), complete service, drained the fuel tank and in fact are replacing it entirely along with new fuel hose and primer ball. Burned the skimmins in the Snapper rider.
The VST on this Yamaha is buried behind the intake. Noone had the gasket or the filter for the VST. I suspect the injectors are full of crud but it may survive without taking it all apart. I mean that is a lot of filters. New tank, fresh fuel, ring free and stabilizer then a fuel pressure test.

Wilson, might should have said squeezins. LOL Boat & motor belong to a good friend. Trying to sort it out in time for the crappie bite. Seafoam is good stuff.:beer:
 
I've got two chainsaws and a blower down due to ethanol fuel. I run stabilizer, 89 or 93 octane in everything, and RUN everything regularly. I'm seriously thinking about buying gas from a bulk suppiler that is ethanol free.
 
I hear that Bradford, there are a few places in central Florida to buy the non-ethanol fuel. It is more $$$ and a bit of a PITA but worth it I guess. So far I have been OK using additives and using the boats often. If you let your equipment sit for long in between uses the non-ethanol might be the way to go. Problem for me now, I can't remember if I put the additive in the V last time or not. :head: Five weeks since last use. How long does the fuel stay fresh?

Unfortunately, "squeezins" are here to stay and we might as well get used to it ...and prepared for it for the long haul...I can't say why, but so far I haven't had any fuel system failures...but it could certainly happen tomorrow...replace all filters, lines, etc to ethanol compatible and get back out there to work on my baby...I can't wait to see what her next life is gonna be like!!...LOL!!...:sun:
 
if thats a 90 EFI Yamaha 4 stroke, then pull the intake off, its not as hard as you think, the bottom bolt is tricky. Take the throttle bodies with it. leave the VST attached to the intake. Once you have the manifold/VST assembly on the table, you can pull the screws out of the top of the vst and drop the resevoir off the bottom. Clean out the resevoir, replace the screen on the fuel pump. Take the injectors out, send them off to have them cleaned(I use injector rx), when you put it all back together, fush the mechanical fuel pump with carb cleaner, then gas. Replace the inline filter between the mechanical pump and the VST. Put it all back together, repalce the fuel line with new, install a water sep filter if you don't allready have one. I've done about 10 of these this year. I've tried every short cut, but its easier int he long run to pull it all apart and do it all at one time
 
Spare, that is what I have been waiting for, a definative answer to the looming question. I didn't know if the screen in the VST was servicable or not. The entire fuel system is clean/new all the way to the pump. It has a water seperator, new tank, new filters, new fuel lines and primer ball. The mechanical pump has not been touched other than to run clean fuel thru it. My local Yamaha shop is now cleaning injectors for $45 ea. I planned on sending them off to Brucato but it would be convenient not to have to. What do you think? The fuel system is nearly identical to the one on the 250 Merc EFI. I don't know why I would treat the Yamaha differently, looking for a shortcut I guess. Thanks again for your input.

the mechanical pump can hold a bit of trash, I ususally spray some power tune thru it and let it sit, them flush it with fresh gas. Injector RX charges $18 per injector, they have a quick turn around, but shipping takes a while, usually about 10 days from the time I ship them till I get them back. Ask the shop how they clean the injectors, if they install new screens and do they perform a flow test when done(Injector RX does). Some of the local shops around here say they clean injectors, they put them in an ultrasonic cleaner and spray carb cleaner thru them. Not the way to do it my opinion.
 
Took the injectors out. It took about a minute. The intake was also a snap. VST was very dirty inside, black deposits of crud on the bottom of the can. Screen type filter was a mess. Buying a new filter and sending the injectors off. Yamaha shop told me that there were no screens avail. for these injectors??? Same guys that want to clean the injectors by backflushing in an ultrasonic bath, I do not believe they have before and after flow rates like RX or Brucato.. Thanks again for the tips.
 
It has been a week and now it is ready to go back together. Pro Flow in New Port Richey, FL did the injectors and they tested flow rates and spray patterns before and after. One injector improved 38%. That is what I was hoping for. The VST is ready to go back on. Once the fuel dried up in the VST I was amazed at the grit that came out of there. When the filter dried it was very clear that it needed to be changed. Wish me luck, it goes back together this evening...
 
Guys, try to use ring free AND Startron on EVERY fill up, i've been doing it now for lots of years(we have ethanol up here for good 5-6 years) and never had a problem(knock on wood). I don't work for Yamaha or Startron (i've been accused for that before), but do your self a favor and do that religiously.
 
I agree with you about the Stabilizers NEMatters. I have yet to hear what ring free does. The owner of this 90 has sworn off any ethanol blended fuel, forever. I still added the ring free and stabilizer.
It went back together without any problems. The new fuel hose was not the Japanese brand and had a larger outside diameter. Getting it thru the rigging grommet turned into a mess. I had to reconfigure a couple times, very tight fit. Flushed the fuel pump, fuel cooler, cannister and replaced yet another filter. Cleaned the throttle body and it was very easy to reassemble. Put 5 gals in the new fuel tank found the water hose and it started right up. Idled right off the bat, silk I tell you. Fed it some throttle and it wrapped right up without hesitation. Sounded like a motorcycle. Owner will lake test this morning I ran out of daylight. Started at 6:15 PM and finished around 8:30. Lost time installing fuel tank and running fuel hose. It got the Racor water seperator with the clear bowl. Maybe he can see the problem before it gets too bad next time. Total cost in parts $650. Filters (total of 6 -the Racor was $50 and the one in the VST was $68), gear lube, oil & filter, plugs, impeller and fuel hose around $350. Fuel tank, injector service, ring free, stabilizer another $300. He didn't shell out any labor, I work for beer...
 
seafoam i have a 50 gallon tank how much should i put in and how offten, i all ways use startron will that go good with seafoam at the same time

If you're running a 4 stroke engine, then use 1 oz per gal. of gas. If you're running a 2 stroke then use 2 oz per gal. of gas/oil mix.

I have no idea on the compatability of Starton and Seafoam since I only use Seafoam, but I would think there would be no problems. If you're hesitant, I'd run Seafoam one time, then Starton the next and alternate them. :head:
