was cruising local craigslist today and found this 86 v. It was 10 mins from my house so you know i had to check it out. this thing is in very very nice shape, i was in shock!! . The guy wants a few hundred bucks. he has no title. and i have no idea what to do with that bracket . would you be able to to reuse that bracket with a new engine? not familiar with the outboards at all. http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/boa/3310780574.html

I just want the gauges!!!!

The seadrive bracket will make a great anchor!!! I had one that was in perfect shape and couldn't sell it to save my life!!! I ended up getting 100 dollars for it and was lucky to get that.

The boat the way it sits would make a great solid transom boat with Armstrong or stainless bracket.

stupid question. is it a big deal to replace paperwork? where is boat located? and when you say "a few hundred bucks", how few?

Charlie, Put it to you like this. if you offered 100.00 less than he is asking you would wind up in the (couple )hundred dollar range ! its in massapequa. judging from the absesce of wear and so few coats of bottom paint i dont think she has spent much time on the water . i like the boat alot, it has the live well in the deck at the base of the transome. Kracker what kind of money are we talking about to put on a transome bracket?

All depends on the shape of the transom. When you remove the seadrive you will have a pretty good idea. I have seen the outboard brackets range from 500 to a 1000 on Craigslist.

I would not personally put a bracket on that transom without reinforcing it with transom knees or some other type of structual assistance. You will have a lot of weight on a very old transom. Get MJ's attention, he should be able to help you alittle better with cost on a bracket conversion on a v20.

as far as the bracket goes i have one in my garage. needs a little sprucing up but it's solid as sh!t. dont wanna count my chickens yet so if it happens i'll worry about it then.

went to see this thing today. it kills me to walk away but there are issues that scare me.
1. cant even deal with current owner. can only go through his friend.
2. nobody knows who or where the previous owner is and he was the last one to title the boat.
3. according to DMV the only way to title this boat is for titled owner to apply for duplicate title.
that said, this boat is in unbelieveable condition for the price. it could have been had for around $200. and parted out for 5 times that. poked around the bilge and it appeared solid. no rot to be found. deck and transom are rock solid. stringers and knee brace stringers are solid, as well. lee stainless rod holders and outrigger mounts. good helm chair and back to back that could be replaced.
this guy bought it and it has been sitting for about 6 years. it's filthy but in exceptional condition. dead bird on dash. neglected for years.
just really hurt me to walk away but i really dont need the headache.

no title is usually a deal breaker in fl, but in some states(check ny) you can have a salvage yard tow it to their yard and impound it for 6 weeks, then they will notify the last title holder on record( by hid or registration). he has 4-6 weeks to answer, if not they can get a title & transfer to you. pia and usually runs $400-$600.

charlie, i told ya the thing was in great shape ! i have been by it again last night as i was looking at another v, it pains me to walk away as well. but i'll tell ya for 200.00 if i had any room at my house i would take it and do what ever it takes. i need a bigger yard damn it.... hell Charlie, i just want to wash it !! lol

Well, lets approach this from a different direction. In the very last picture I see registration numbers on the hull. What you need is to go to your local Coast Guard (yes, the Coast Guard) station. They can look up the numbers and tell you who the numbers are registered to and the address of that person. A lot of times they will even have the phone number. I know this from first hand experience because several years ago while i was at anchor a boat came by and cut my anchor line with his prop, and kept going. i took off after him and finally caught up to him and told him he cut my line, he basically told me to stuff it. But I got his numbers and wrote them down, then went to the local Coast Guard station to report the incident. The Petty Officer there said it was a very serious incident, that the marine laws are very different than land laws about leaving the scene of an accident and that the guy was facing a $5000 dollar fine and 5 years in jail if convicted. He asked me what i wanted to do and I told him all I really wanted was for the guy to replace my line and anchor. He looked up the numbers and gave me the guys name, his address and his phone number... I called him and after a few F-U's from him I explained what he was facing. Long story short I ordered a new Danforth 12T anchor and 100 feet of 1/2" line plus 6' of rode chain and sent him the bill... next week I got a check from him.

Seems the states are required by law to forward all hull numbers of boats to the Coast Guard for safety and security reasons. Not talking about the VIN numbers, talking about the registration numbers on the side of the boat. So if you went to the Coast Guard and told them about the boat maybe there's a chance you might be able to get the previous owners name and address. It's a longshot i know, but to me it's worth the time to try.

Great post, Destroyer. I learn a heckuva lot from you on this board. Good stuff!

Buckleyjr, thank you for the kind quodos. From more people than I can even mention I've gotten such great information from this board that I just try to give back as best I can. I owe a huge debt to to MJ for running the board and to RWilson for suggesting that I come here, and to everyone else for all the knowledge and help they have given me through the years. This board truly is a family affair.
