2006 ETEC 60hp no oil alarm

Hey guys, I have a 2006 60 hp etec on my pontoon boat. When I took it out of the water the no oil alarm showed its ugly face. It has the oil tank under the cowling, which was nearly full.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what might cause it and what might be involved in fixing it? Also, if is complicated, wondering if just disconnecting the oil injection and going with premix might be an easy option on this motor?

Thanks,
Blue

Don t know about evinrudes, but merc s of that size have have issues with oil tank alarm failures. The alarm is built in the tank and comes as one unit.

If not too costly and it s reliable, i d try to keep the injection system intact. I think 2S run better when not oil rich

Hopefully Spare will be along with some real knowledge.

I just read where it isn't possible to bypass it because the way it injects the oil in each cylinder? Saw also where maybe it could be the oil pressure sensor? Agree with you phat about leaving it intact if it is reliable. I haven't hear of any widespread issue with the oil injection failing with etecs, but suppose that is possible.

If you're like me you hate it when a computer tells ya you can't do something that should be really easy! That drives me up the wall! Like my old Honda foreman 450 electric shift. I ended up bypassing the computer because it wouldn't shift. Best thing I ever did!

I'm not exactly sure how those things are set up. If its like the older OMC product, they had a screen in the oil tank that was known to get stopped up, especially if it had been sitting for a while. Wouldn't hurt to clean out the oil tank and check the pickup in it. While you're at it, see if it has a float sensor in it to check teh oil level. They can get stuck, you can put an ohm meter one the leads to teh float and see if it moves when you move teh float. Sorry, but beyond the basics, I'm just not familiar enough with those engines to help much.

Spare & Phat,

The toon has sat up quite a bit. I did read something about a filter/screen getting clogged. Maybe I'll give it a shot. If not I'll need to see if I can find a shop that can take a look at it.

I really appreciate the replies. I'll post back as soon as it can rise up as a priority on my list LOL.

Why can’t you just add the oil to the gas and bypass it. I did on my mercury. I was told to do that for a long time but I didn’t 7ntil it stopped working. Very close to the marina. ( Lucky) now I just add 13 oz for five gallons of gas. And use the liquid transfer pump from harbor freight. Works out great. That’s 50 to 1

Update on the Etec - I ended up taking it to a shop not too far from here that works on Etec - none of the other local shops will touch them. I just got a call today that it was ready to pick up. I asked what was the issue? He read it off to me and basically the tech just re-primed the oil pump and at first it was showing low oil pulse but after priming it the low oil pulse went away. Said he ran it on a hose 15 min no issues. Also said that he saw where some oil had leaked down on the cowling (oil tank and fill is IN the cowling) and he did not see any leak but could keep looking for $140/hr LOL. I probably spilled a little last time I added some is my thought. End result is it is ready and my bill is gonna be $204.

So, we'll see if I still get the no oil alarm once I get it in the water in a month or two.

204 dollars to basically do nothing prime the oil? What’s that? Maybe you had air in the system ? I’m in the wrong business.
Your lucky,if you were in nj. It would be much more. I hope that was the issue. But still ,take out the pickup tube and clean the bottom where the screen should be. I wish that you could bypass the system all together.
13 oz of oil to a 5 gallon gas can. Then go to harbor frieight and buy yourself a transfer pump ,under $15.00 works with two D battery’s. That’s what I do. Piece of cake. But I have a ,ore serious problem now. A fuel leak. Somewhere.
