2002/2003 mercury 200 xl prop questions

Prop insert is cracked in spots like its been stressed.

Copling/spine converter. Is sloppy when its in prop insert.

As im working on my girlfriends parents Proline today i noticed there was alot of slop in the prop and output shaft. So i took the prop off and its different than what im used to. That insert seen in pic has cracks in it and the spline/prop copling is super sloppy in the prop. Do you knock the prop insert out and replace it? What a crappy design!!!!

That's the exchangeable hub system that most manufacturers are going to now. The MICHIGAN WHEEL hubs seem to fit a bit tighter from my experience, but none of them are that tight. It was a way to cut prop costs down as with this system the same prop can fit all brands with a hub change out.

Yep. They come as a hub kit for about $40. It will come with the forward thrust washer(for most applications) the nylon insert, the drive sleeve, and many also come with a prop nut and locking washer(for MERCURY). I believe the MERCURY uses a XHS kit #202 if I'm not mistaken. I'll check the catalog here shortly for you.

Just checked and it does use a XHS kit # 202. Type XHS 202 in your search engine and you will get MANY results back for it.

when i first came across this system, i was not impressed, but it does give you the ability to repair a "slipped hub" without a prop shop. after doing this a few times without going to the shop, i like it.

seems to be the norm now

It's a LOT cheaper than going to a marina with a Michigan Wheel type pressed in spun rubber hub and paying them a lot of money to press out the old "spun" hub and press in a new one. I love the system. I can change props just by changing the prop. Also, you'll find that various makers used various materials. I've got props with plastic, rubber and even one that seems to be using some kind of nylon. But they all fit on my engine as quick as 1,2,3.
