1984 50 hp Mercury carb issues

My 1984 50 hp outboard is shooting gas out from the top but since it's a side mount it's coming out from the side that would be the top
When it's at mid to full throttle it's ok but at idle it leaks bad and stalls
Is there anything I can do without removing the carb?
I put in a full can of seafoam to 2 gallons of gas and am running it with that hoping it would free up what is sticking, but do far all it does is smoke a lot
Any suggestions?

Not familiar with that engine,
How many carbs and cylinders?

Never had much luck with mechanic in a can solutions, sounds like you need to pull carb and clean needle and seat.

Usually its easier to pull them all at once and clean them all.

Yeah I noticed he was MIA, also. Hope he s just super busy.

Not sure if that s a true Merc or a rebadged Yamaha, but I d just pull the carbs and clean them out. Should just be undo the choke and throttle linkage, then undo both carbs off the manifold and remove with the sync linkage still on them. Once you get them off, then break apart.

Probably a couple hundred YouTube videos to help you. I would go with OEM parts if you need to replace any.

Dam Phat, you make it sound easy, I wish I had your talent and spares too
I think what I'm going to do is remove the bowl and see if the float is stuck, that's about the most I feel comfortable with. After that ,I will bring it to a Mercury shop
First one guy at the Mercury shop said we can't do it cause it's a old (1984) outboard then I ask the mechanic and he said sure ,bring it down. I will let you know how I make out.
I hope spare is just busy ,nothing else .
Going out for fluke and blue fish tomorrow and weakfish too,yep weakfish.

Fishing? Oh yeah what was I thinking
I'm fishing very very close to my marina and doing pretty good
Not going for stripers but catching cocktail blues and fluke and weakfish and not burning
8 gallons of gas maybe closer to 5 gallons
As far as the carb issue goes ,I think I'm going to have a problem, the motor is a 1984 50 hp and getting a carb girl it is going to be a challenge , I went to the marina where I live and they said they will try to help me but was told before that they can't.
So if you know anything or anywhere that I can get a carburetor for my engine let me know .
I'm still looking. I bet spare can fix it in his sleep and you too I bet , but me not do much. I will tell you how my fishing goes the next time I go out.
Later gator ,.

Carb girl? My bad. Erase the girl.
The carb issue maybe that's what I wanted to write But is there a carb girl out there? I'm good with that

I found her

:fam:

I saw the news story on her, kinda cool way for a teenager to make some money that s not sitting behind a computer screen.

That would put some zip in the ole Merc 50 horse

Yep, sounds like a float stuck or maybe trash in between the needle and seat not letting it close when the bowl is full. You can get a carb kit and go through it. Its not hard, really. Check the float, maybe saturated with gas making it too heavy, holding the needle open.

Phat daddy send her to me. This would be a piece of cake for her and as far as the float being stuck, I took the bowl off and it was stuck because a metal piece came off and wedge itself between the float and the wall. The piece that came off is call a baffle, I don't know what it does but was told it keeps the fuel in the bowl flowing when you make hard turns. I put the bowl back on to test it but fuel was leaking from the bowl gasket. I just ordered a kit that has the bowl gasket and am waiting to put it together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed . I never messed with a carb before and am hoping it lines up ,the gasket with the bottom of the carb. I will let you guys and girls know how I make out.
The problem is that I'm doing this while it's still on the block, not to much space to work with, I just have to make sure I don't drop the screw. That would reely suck
