    Mercury timing adjustments

I am attempting to check and adjust the timing (as needed) of my Mariner 150 with the help of a shop manual and the 1st item is to check and adjust the timing pointer. It describes getting #1 cylinder to TDC with the help of a dial indicator. Then rotating the flywheel ccw until the dial...

    Stalling at low rpm

I have not checked for vacuum leaks. Thanks for the idea. I have to admit I not sure how to check with starting fluid and should I expect to singe eyebrows in the process ?? By the way - cool user name - Carl

    Stalling at low rpm

I did a compression check and found all cylinders are within a few #'s of each other. Here are the averages 1= 112 2 = 112 3 =110 4 = 115 5 =115 6 = 110 I rebuilt the fuel pump yesterday which helps the overall performance, but it does not help at all in the low rpms. I did not yet pull the...

    Stalling at low rpm

So, I did some diagnosis this afternoon. Here is what I did. I ran on a separate fuel tank with new fuel bypassing the racor - No change I pulled a wire off one at a time starting with 1-3-5. Pulling 1 and 3 made the idle slow and almost stall. Pulling 3 did nothing - no change. I did the...

    Stalling at low rpm

The plugs are new this season. Wires have not been changed in the 5 years I have had the engine. I have not done anything to the carbs except use some carb cleaner on them at the end of last season. The carb cleaner did not seem to have any effect. I will keep trying Thanks Carl

    Stalling at low rpm

I have my engine set to idle around 1K rpm. I had turned it up from 850 rpm since the engine would stall as soon as I shifted into gear. I still have a stalling issue, but not quite as bad. My problem is more shifting from fwd to reverse or reverse to fwd especially trying to get the boat...

    Voltage Regultor Wiring

I picked up a voltage regultor yesterday. My engine does not currently have a regulator so I can't do the typical method of remove and replace wire for wire. I know I connect the yellow wires to the 2 yellow wires going to the rectifier. My questions are: How and where to connect the 2 red...

    High voltage over 3500 rpms

I am resurrecting this thread again since I experienced similar problems again this year, but worse. He is my situation. Last year as noted earlier in this thread, I had high voltage and for the remainder of the season, I always turned on all the electric accessories (lights, radio, fish/depth...

    Fuel delivery issue

I was driving in on Saturday after a good day of black seabass fishing with my Dad. The ride in was about 30 minutes at 3500 rpm with no problems. After I was in sheltered water, I went WOT and after about a minute the engine shut down. No alarms - no bad noise - just rpms went to 0 and it...

    Starting problems

I did some testing tonight and I think I found the problem, but I would like to validate it with your thoughts. I cleaned all the connections, but it did not make a difference. I measured battery voltage and then compared across the starter solenoid. With the ignition off, I had voltage on...

    Starting problems

I was on the ramp this morning ready to splash and the motor would not start - just click - click - click - everytime I turned the key. It started fine last week in the driveway and gave me similar trouble last night, but I attributed it to a battery that probable needs replacing anyway, so I...

    Unable to turn motor

Hey Stuarbc - It's interesting that you mentioned that the hole in the splash well was not in alignment with the steering tube. Mine is the same way and I never did completely remove the steering cable and I did not want to enlarge the hole in the splash well. I wonder if this is a common...

    Unable to turn motor

Sorry Blue, Here's what I did - I removed the nut that holds the steering cable to the tilt tube and sprayed WD-40 in the tilt tube. I then removed the large nut on the port side of the tilt tube. The 2 large nuts that hold the tilt tube, are self locking and do not move that easily. That I...
