I have traced a stiff shift issue to the Intermediate shift shaft bushing in my Merc R drive. I removed the intermediate shaft which was binding to find what appears to be a sleeve within a bushing set up. The shaft looks fine, as far as I can tell from looking around at the parts listings...

yes the lower exchanger hose( visible in 2nd pic) runs under the engine and up the other side to the water pump. The smaller hose seen on the right of the exchanger is the raw water feed. Sterndrives are new to me, I have only ever had outboards in the past.

Here are pics of the motor,some of the paint flaked off the heat exchanger when I pressure washed it,is it possible/worth repainting over the copper? and what would be the paint to use,TIA
