To sum up my repower adventure, everything went very smoothly thanks to the help of my mechanic — and good buddy — who owns a small rural marina and repair shop and pretty much does it all himself. The new 140hp Tohatsu with the 15-pitch prop seems to be a perfect match for the boat. It jumps up on plane incredibly fast, much quicker than the old Yamaha 2-stroke ever did, and tops out at 32 mph at WOT turning 5800 RPMs.
Out the door, including the new motor, gauges, cables, controls, prop, tube kit to neatly hide the cables, a custom bracket to mount the water/fuel separator out of sight, new battery switch, engine and gear oil, plus all shop supplies, the total came in under 12K.
I’m going to put a few more hours on it while finishing the break-in period, then I’ll send the oil off to Blackstone for a baseline analysis. After that, I plan to run AMSOIL Marine oil and gear lube.
I also want to sincerely thank everyone for all the advice, comments, and guidance along the way. It was greatly appreciated and definitely helped make this project a success. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
